In 2014, the world will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I. Beginning on July 28, 1914 and concluding on November 11, 1918, it was one of the largest and bloodiest wars in history. Some 9 million people lost their lives during the World War but amongst the stories of death and destruction were legends of heroes, every day men and women doing extraordinary things. Author description

Kim Lockwood is an acclaimed author with a keen interest in Australian history. Growing up in Darwin after the war - his father, journalist and author Douglas Lockwood was there for the bombing on 19 February 1942 - he later worked as a journalist in Perth, back in Darwin (where he lived through cyclone Tracy) and Melbourne, undertaking senior editorial roles for the Herald and Weekly Times and News Ltd. He is the author of or contributor to 16 books, including Charles 'Bud' Tingwell's War Stories.
